Venous disease
What is venous disease?
Venous disease is a disorder that affects the circulation of blood in the body. Women are generally more susceptible to the condition, especially during certain periods of their life like pregnancy, or when taking medication like the contraceptive pill, but it is not uncommon for men to suffer from the disease as well. Venous disease is very common in Europe and North America (affecting up to 40% of the adult population). The most common risk factors include a sedentary lifestyle, weight gain, hormonal disorders, deep vein thrombosis, general impaired blood vessel function, muscle pump failure and heredity.
The most severe cases of venous disease manifest with phlebitis or varicose
phlebitis, thrombophlebitis or varicose ulcers. The regular occurrence of these symptoms
is known as chronic venous disease (CVD).
Veins affected by venous disease
are tortuous, elongated and visible, and are regarded as a genuine aesthetic defect by many patients.
As well as aesthetic defects, venous disease may cause symptoms including pins and needles in the legs, swollen/tired legs, swollen ankles, muscle cramps, a constant cold sensation and telangiectasias (dilation of the venules, capillaries and arteriolae), visible through the skin.
